It's been a while since my last post, and that's because I was out of the country traveling in South America! My husband John and I took a belated honeymoon to Chile and Argentina for two weeks over the holidays, and it was one of the most amazing trips of our lives. Plus, travel photography is a passion of mine that I don't get to pursue as much as I would like, so I had lots of fun snapping shots of everything from penguins to glaciers to tango dancers. :)
We flew into Santiago, Chile on December 20th and explored the city (that was supposed to be December 19th, thanks malfunctioning radar that caused us to turn back to Houston). We then took a day trip to Valparaíso and saw two houses in which the poet and writer Pablo Neruda lived: La Sebastiana in Valpo, and another in Isla Negra nearby. The next day, we took a day trip in the other direction to Cajón del Maipo, Santiago's reservoir just a few miles away from the Argentinean border.
After Santiago, we flew south to Punta Arenas: the southernmost city on the American continent. We arrived on Christmas day so most things were closed, but we did get the chance to go to Isla Magdalena to see literally thousands of penguins! Since we were visiting in Southern Hemisphere summer, there were penguin chicks everywhere and the days were nearly 20 hours long. Then, we departed on our Australis small boat cruise! We sailed through the Patagonian fjords of Parque Nacional Alberto de Agostini, seeing glaciers, subantarctic forests, and lots of wildlife, and finished with a hike up Cape Horn, the southernmost point in the world short of Antarctica.
The next day, we arrived in Ushuaia, Argentina: the southernmost city in the world, on the island of Tierra del Fuego. We hiked up to Glaciar Martial, grabbed some dinner, and flew out the next day to Buenos Aires where we saw an Argentinean tango show on New Years Eve. After the show, fireworks were being set off right next to the giant Obelisco on Avenida 9 de Julio, which was almost better than the show itself. The next few days we explored Buenos Aires and did some horseback riding just out of the city in one of the province's parks.
