This year over the holidays, we escaped the Ohio cold for surf and sun...in Hawai'i! My in-laws live in Sacramento, so after spending time with them for Christmas, John and I jumped on a plane for Kona, on the Big Island of Hawai'i. I had been to Maui, Oahu, and Kauai in college, so the one major island I hadn't been to- the Big Island- was an easy choice of destination. We loved the diversity we encountered- sunny surf in Kona, lush rainforest near Hilo, the green, windswept beach of Papakolea, and the steaming sulfur vents of Volcanoes National Park (even if most of it was closed due to the government shutdown). We also went scuba diving, but we opted not to risk any good camera in the water, so unfortunately there aren't any pictures. (We bought a disposable, circa 1999, but it flooded. Go figure.)
